I’m waiting on the front steps again.

Waiting for the flash of the green Jeep to come turning around the corner and into the driveway. My bag is packed, filled with my favorite toys and stories for bedtime. I’m still waiting when Mom comes out.

“He’ll be here soon,” she says. Her face is sad.

The Jeep is here and I go running to meet him, dragging my bag with me. “Daddy!” But he’s angry.

“No, Scott…you’re not taking him like this.” Mom is crying. I’m already in the car. “Scott…you’re not okay to drive. Scott, if you take him, I’m going to call the po—”

Mom’s on the ground. John’s here now. He’s with mom and then he has me in his arms. Daddy’s yelling but then he’s gone.

“I want my daddy.”

John tells me he knows and hugs me.
